While the department has broad authority to investigate health matters and implement measures for disease prevention and control, its duties also include coordinating health programs, offering guidance, and ensuring access to quality healthcare services across the Commonwealth. The department permits public bathing places in the Commonwealth.

The department registers home producers of various baked and confectionary foods. PDA registers and inspects all food and beverage manufacturing firms in the Commonwealth. In areas without a local health department, PDA licenses and inspects all retail food facilities as well.

The Pennsylvania Septage Management Association (PSMA) is organized as a 501(c)(6) non-profit trade association in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Penn State Extension is a modern educational organization dedicated to delivering science-based information to people, businesses, and communities. They provide access to face-to-face and online education to customers—when they want it, where they want it, and how they want it—to help them address problems and take advantage of opportunities for improvement and innovation. Partnering with and funded by federal, state, and county governments, they have a long tradition of bringing unbiased support and education to the citizens of Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Section of the American Water Works Association (PA-AWWA) was established in October 1948 when Eastern and Western Pennsylvania joined to form a unified section. Guided by its vision of “A better world through better water” and its mission of “Providing solutions to effectively manage water, the world’s most important resource,” PA-AWWA works to enhance water management across Pennsylvania. Today, PA-AWWA has nearly 1,500 members and is governed by a Board of Directors. Councils, committees, and staff manage the technical, management, and educational programs, encouraging member participation.
